2 SPANISH IMMIGRANTS IN BERLIN IN 1975

2 Spanish Immigrants in Berlin in 1975

Project developed within the Hàbitat grant programme (City Council of Castellón, 2023), during an artist residency at Glogauer, Berlin.

This work stems from a research process focused on memory, displaced identity, and the way objects can trigger personal or collective narratives. It began with a photograph found at a Berlin flea market: two figures captured in a mirror by an analogue camera. By fragmenting the image and omitting their faces, the scene becomes ambiguous, silent, and open to interpretation.

The installation revolves around a Spanish vase from 1975 —the year of Franco’s death— also acquired as a souvenir. This object becomes a symbol of transition: between eras, spaces, and realities. It is juxtaposed with geometric structures and industrial materials referencing Central European design from the 1970s, creating a visual and political dialogue between two contexts.

The title evokes a fictional, possible, or real story: that of two Spanish immigrants in Berlin in 1975. Through dissonant formal elements and intersecting cultural references, the piece proposes a fragmented reading of history, where the viewer is invited to fill in the gaps with their own memory. A performative evocation of remembrance, where the symbolic blends with the emotional and the uncertain.
